PATTERNS

We are now headed home after 7 weeks of chemo and radiation 🚙 🏠! I am beyond thrilled to see my birds and flowers and sleep in my own bed. I know these next two weeks will be hard as the rest of the radiation burns surface internally and externally but I have this AMAZING #blocksforbelle community quilt to wrap myself in as I deal with those hard days and then slowly begin to heal. I also am so grateful for my loyal, diligent and amazing husband as the best caregiver I could ever as for. I couldn’t do cancer without him. 💞

Thank you again to those of you who contributed to this most loving gift 💝 , to @theretroquilter who organized it, as well as all of you who offered encouragement and prayers throughout one of the most challenging experiences I have been through in life. ❤️‍🩹

I wanted to take a moment to share each of the beautiful blocks that many of you made for me in my #blocksforbelle Community Quilt. I wasn’t able to capture each of them in my unboxing video Saturday, so QH and I videoed each of them yesterday evening. If you made one of these blocks and didn’t sign it, please comment which one was yours so I’ll know who you are 🫶🏻.

There were 112 blocks total. The ones in the quilt, some in the pillow I showed Saturday and then some extras that were the wrong size or that arrived past the deadline that Maude set. I’ll make something special out of those 🥰.

Thank you all again for such an amazing quilt. And thank you @theretroquilter for organizing the most special gift I’ve ever received. I feel so loved and supported by this quilting community during this cancer treatment journey. ❤️‍🩹

We did it y’all! And I say ‘we’ because you all loyally cheered 👏🏼 and encouraged me for the last 7 weeks of this brutal cancer treatment of radiation ☢️ and chemo 💉 . Today was my last and 35th time for these proton beams to zap the three tumors in my neck and head.

What made me so happy about this last session ( besides being the last) was I was able to use my #blocksforbelle community quilt that 112 of you were apart of making for me 🥰 and that @theretroquilter so lovingly organized . The radiation therapists were in awe not only of the loving gesture but also of how beautiful it is. 🤩

They and quilt husband helped record what was allowed for you all to see what happened 5 days a week in this room. Claudia ( what I named my mask) is coming home with me and I’ll be turn her into a beautiful piece of art using my fabric collections. She was tight. She left marks when I was swollen after chemo each week but she protected me by keeping me in place so the beams went into just the right spots. She will always remind me I can do hard things with the help of my Heavenly Father, my family, my friends and you-my supportive quilting community.

Thank you for every encouraging DM, email, gift, care package, card, call and prayer. I have felt love in a way I have never experienced before and for that, I am forever grateful to you.

We move back home Wednesday to deal with last two weeks of cumulative side effects and then I’ll start to heal and detox my body of the radiation and chemo. I return for scans in September with what I hope is great news!

The most special community quilt ( #blocksforbelle ) arrived on a much needed day today- a very challenging morning of cancer treatment mouth & throat pain that we are having a hard time controlling even with pain meds.

The unboxing & sharing video is 20 min long ( fair warning, I have a crying melt down). And IG may not show this video to all of you for that reason so I hope this post finds its way to you if you made a block for me. 💛

This community quilt was organized by my dear sew sister, @theretroquilter as a way to offer hope, comfort and support . Maude & I met in 2021 in a @quilters_candy Dredsen class ( dresdens are special to us for this reason) & then the pattern writing course & we have continued to support one another in our quilt business ever since. I have participated in several community quilts but never in my wildest dreams imagined I would be in a health situation where I would need or receive one. Thank you dearest Maude for doing something so special for me during the hardest part of the tail end of my cancer treatment. 🫶🏻💛 Thank you for the special dreseden block in the center of the quilt. Thank you for handstiching the binding with love over a weekend. Thank little Charlie & Bennie for making blocks for me too. Thank you for making a trip across the border to coordinate with @maraquiltdesigns in Buffalo ( US blocks were sent to her and she shipped it). Thank you Marija for assisting & for the beautiful matching pillow made with the extra quilt block & for making a special trip across the border to Canada to drop off the US blocks.

I have really no words ( really only sobbing in the video) to express my gratitude to each of you kind souls (who participated) in this quilting community for caring about me enough to make a quilt block for this Blocks For Belle Community Quilt 🙏. I will treasure this special quilt forever & would be one of the few things I would grab if my house was on fire. 🔥

Today started off with a 10 on the pain scale- as in hurt so bad my body was cold and shaky and I could not swallow. It felt like my throat was closing up from inflammation. I was scared and felt helpless ( as did QH). The hydrocodone didn’t do a single thing to help other than make me sleepy. I messaged my nurse first thing he and the dr met with us right after radiation. He decide on a script for Oxycodone ( liquid format). I was hoping to avoid it but the paid was too unbearable. 😫 You see, I can’t cry before radiation because it causes congestion and then then can’t do radiation because I can’t breathe under the hr mask. I kept praying for my tears to stop in time and because I felt like I was drowning. After several prayers, I stopped crying. 🙏

We made it to my last chemo session ( all while waiting for my pain script) and it lasted 5 hrs ( and QH got my pain meds which started helping immediately) . Then the team stayed after hours so they could be there to cheer me ringing the chemo bell. Terry my nurse today, ready this sweet poem and they gave me a congratulations certificate. I also gave each of my nurses zip pouches out of my Montgomery Mountain Charm collection. They took such loving tender scare of me.

What’s next? Radiation tomorrow and then my final on Monday then I’ll ring the Proton Radiation bell 🔔!

Dear Quilty friends- I cannot thank you enough for all of your encouraging messages and prayers throughout these 7 weeks. I have felt your love and support and will never forget those of you loyal ones who showed they truly cared. It’s in times like these, you find out who REALY cares 🫶🏻.

This isn’t a normal quilty post I would make but I just had to share this beautiful chemo hexie lap quilt that Courtney of @onecommonthreadquilts sent me this past week. Each hexie is handstitched by women in Honduras ( who make these to sell and support their families). Courtney makes trips to take donated fabrics to them often so they have plenty of supplies. If you are looking for a good cause to destash your fabrics to, go check out her IG page for details. At a minimum, give her cause a follow.💜

Thank you Courtney- it kept me warm today for round 4 of 7 of chemo 🥰. It felt like a warm hug 🤗

Why a random hexie pix? It leads into the not so pretty pictures in the carousel. I am stitching one of these hexie flowers a day of my 35 radiation and chemo treatments. Eventually I’ll make it into a special quilt to remind myself I could do hard brave things with support.

The second picture is me in my radiation mask ( I’ve named her Claudia - think Great British Sewing Bee) on the proton table. This mask fits so tightly, it leaves tiny hexie marks on my face and eyelids. This is harder than my first chemo session Monday by far. Even after taking an Ativan beforehand. I’m employing prayer and several other tools I’ve learned in several therapy sessions to deal with my claustrophobia. Yesterday, the team was able to play the Inappropriate Quilters podcast to help time pass quickly so that was a huge help too. 🎙️

I will be turning Claudia into something beautiful by decoupaging her in my two fabric collection- Montgomery Mountain Charm for the inside of the mask and Always for the outside. It will remind me that she was a beautiful helper- to keep my face completely still so that the proton beams hit only the tumors and places they are supposed to hit.

Being brave and strong is not easy- we don’t know what we are capable of until we are in a situation that requires it. I can’t thank all of you enough for the prayers, messages, cards, grocery gift cards and sweet care packages. And also @theretroquilter who has apparently coordinated a community quilt made up of quilt blocks that many of you are making for me. I cried for days over this loving gesture 😭.

Here we go. Today is chemo first ( on Mondays) and then radiation Monday-Fridays for 7 weeks. Last night wasn’t the best sleep because we had to visit the ER due to my chemo port being red and itchy. It was determined I’m having an allergic reaction to the dissolvable stitches. I’ll have to wait that out for two more weeks with Benadryl cream and Zyrtec. So today, no numbing cream or plastic bandage on port site for chemo infusion but I can handle it 💪🏻. Radiation is at 6:10p.

It’s release day for Montgomery Ribbon in my new Montgomery Mountain Charm fabrics 💛. By combining a few Benartex Superior Solids with the collection, you create secondary diamonds across each ‘ribbon’. The entire quilt is made up of one block and no HST’s ( just the stitch and flip method). 😉 It comes in lap and baby size along with video tutorial. Now that my Montgomery Mountain Charm and curated Blissfield solids are in fabrics shops, it’s time to share my Montgomery Ribbon pattern with you 💛. I designed this pattern a few years ago and some of you may have seen it at Quilt Market this past fall when I launched my first fabric collection with Benartex.

The entire quilt is made using one traditional block and due to placement of fabrics, it creates this cool ribbon effect. There are NO HST’s since we use the easy stitch and flip method. The pattern comes with video tutorials and is available in lap and baby size.

It’s a FREE pattern release day ⭐️! To celebrate my first fabric collection, Montgomery Mountain Charm, I’m thrilled to share with my followers and subscribers my Montgomery Stars quilt pattern 💫.

This is a traditional double sawtooth star quilt in the scrappiest of ways. It takes just 25 Fat Quarters to make the entire top INCLUDING scrappy binding! I used my 25 FQ Montgomery bundle and separated lights from darks within the blocks to create contrast, making the inner and outer stars pop. This block is also perfect for fussy cutting your star centers too 🙌🏻.

Quilt husband had the best time at his first QuiltCon ❤️. He loved meeting so many of you and he helped make this trip so much easier by being his sweet helper self.
